Abstract
Background: The tympanic cavity and the nasopharynx are connected by the Eustachian tube (ET). Sustaining the middle ear pressure and aeration depends on the normal function of the eustachian tube (ET).ET dysfunction may result in middle ear disorders.
Aim: To correlate the relation between the ET function and the surgical outcomes of type I tympanoplasty in chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) inactive mucosal type.
Patients and methods: The fifty-five patients with inactive mucosal chronic suppurative otitis media (COM) who were recruited from the outpatient clinics of the otorhinolaryngology department at Al-Azhar University Hospital (Alhussien and Bab alsheria) between February 2023 and January 2024. It was a prospective clinical case series study.
Results: The findings of the Saccharine test and the Toynbee test for graft uptake groups differed statistically significantly (p<0.001), while there was no statistically substantial variation between graft uptake groups methylene blue test results (p=0.062). The success rate was 49 (89.1%); 42 (76.4%) patients were intact, and 7 (12.7%) were retracted, while residual perforation was found in 10.9% of patients. Only one patient suffered from wound infection, and one patient suffered from loss of taste. There was a significant decrease in ABG postoperatively at all studied frequencies.
Conclusion: The Saccharine test and Toynbee test demonstrated a strong favorable association with the results of the hearing and graft healing.
