Abstract
Background: The modern definition of labor is the process through which the fetus and placenta are delivered to the outside world through the vagina. According to contemporary medical understanding, labor begins when the uterus begins contracting regularly and painfully, and the contractions increase in frequency and intensity as labor progresses. Aim and objectives: to assess the present management practices of normal vaginal deliveries at Fayoum General Hospital, with a specific focus on emergency obstetric care. Patients and Methods: This study was observational study it was undertaken in Fayoum General Hospital in the period of 6 months from January 2022 to June 2022 on 300 patients. Results: Auditing of history taking revealed that; asking about investigations was not appropriately done in 66% of cases, past pregnancy problems was not appropriately done in 6.7% of cases. Abnormal symptoms was not appropriately done in 1.7% of cases, vaginal bleeding was not appropriately done in 1% of cases and rupture membrane was not appropriately done in 0.7% of cases. Changing bed sheet with every patient was not appropriately done in all cases (100%). Among our studied population, selective episiotomy was done in 41.3% of cases using vycril suture in all of them. Auditing of management of episiotomy revealed that selective episiotomy was done in 124 cases. Conclusion: Based on our findings, we believe that Fayoum General Hospital is falling short in several key areas of care, including appropriateness of caregiver-patient interaction, safety and completeness of examinations, and appropriateness of postpartum care.
