Abstract

Background: A benign bone tumor with a high potential for local spread, aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are a serious medical condition. Approximately 79% of cases manifest as primary bone cysts, whereas the remaining 20% manifest as secondary bone lesions correlated with other bony diseases such giant cell tumor. Aim and objectives: This research aimed primarily to review & study the epidemiology, surgical management, recurrence and functional outcome of aneurysmal bone cyst about ankle and foot. Subjects and methods: This prospective study included 21 patients with bone cyst around ankle and foot, managed at Al-Azhar University Hospitals fitting the inclusion criteria from august 2022 to august 2023. Results: there is significant increase in AOFAS from preoperative to postoperative, there is significant increase in MSTS score from preoperative to postoperative and there was only one patient showed recurrence and 95% of the patients had no recurrence. Conclusion: Curettage with or without autogenous bone graft or bone substitute (cement) is safe, effective successful method for treating aneurysmal bone cyst about ankle and foot. The surgery resulted in significant improvement in functional outcome, pain and was associated with minimal recurrence and complications rate. The epidemiology of aneurysms Bone cyst of the Ankle and Foot Abnormal ABCs in the foot are uncommon. This bone tumor is typically found in the upper extremities along metaphyseal bone regions.
