Abstract
Background: Poisoning is a prevalent concern. That requires major attention as it causes mortality worldwide. Poisoning has been known as a silent weapon, used intentionally and unintentionally without any violence.
Objective: The aim of the work is to study victims who died by poisoning who were examined and reported by the Forensic Medicine Authority in Sohag Governorate. Our goal is to elucidate the pattern of poisoning mortality in Sohag.
Subjects and methods: This study is a retrospective study carried out in Forensic Medicine Authority in Sohag Governorate, Egypt. Data were collected from the files, through autopsy reports and investigations. Cases were studied as regards age, gender, socioeconomic level of victims, place, types of poison and manner of death.
Results: The number of poisoned fatal cases reported in 2022 in Sohag was 113, with a prevalence of females among all age groups except in the second decade of life, with total female cases of 59 (52.2%) and male cases of 54 (47.8%). As regards age, the 3rd decade age predominates in 41 cases: 36.2%. Homicidal and accidental female poisoning cases predominate, 28 females vs. 15 males. Metal phosphide was the most used poison in both suicides (54 cases: 87%) of the total suicidal cases (62 cases).
Conclusion: This study highlights the poisoning fatality in Sohag governorate that exceeds other unnatural deaths. Although there is still a possibility of underreporting and inadequate referral of cases, this suggests a need for improved data collection and reporting mechanisms for a better understanding of the extent of poisoning-related fatalities.
