Abstract

Background: Varicose veins (VV) are the most prevalent condition that results in substantial illness in the lower limbs and, therefore, contribute to higher healthcare expenses.

Aim: To compare conventional surgery, stripping, and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the Great Saphenous Vein (GSV) in treating (VV) in the lower limbs of Al-Azhar University hospital patients.

Patients and methods: This was a prospective study that included 60 patients presented to the vascular outpatient of Al-Azhar University Hospital with varicose veins of the lower limbs from January 2020 to May 2021.

Result: Comparison regarding subjective scoring (1-4) between GSV stripping and RF subjective scoring was better in the stripping group than in the RF group. Although there was no statistical significance P<0.05, recurrence was observed in one case in the RF group, while no recurrence was detected in the stripping group, and the complications rate was low, with 1 patient (8.3%) recording postoperative wound infection in the stripping group, which improved on repeated dressing and medical therapy. In contrast, the RF group had one case (ten percent) of superficial thrombophlebitis and one case (ten percent) of paraesthesia. No cases of skin burns have been reported.

Conclusion: Radio-frequent ablation is a unique technique for treating lower limb varicose veins, offering improved pain reduction, quality of life, faster recovery, and lower recurrence rates compared to traditional methods.
