Abstract

Background: Trauma harms the body from an exchange of environmental energy that exceeds the body's natural resilience.

Aim: To study If we can minimize the rate of untherapeutic surgical laparotomies in selected cases of penetrating abdominal trauma.

Patients and methods: This was prospective research performed on 50 cases of invasive abdominal trauma in the general surgical department at Al-Hussain University Hospital and Damanhur Medical National Institute.

Results: 6% of cases had success, with a significant relationship between success and injury site. Success was found in all types of injuries, including epigastric, Lt hypochondrium, umbilical, and Lt iliac. However, failure was not significantly related to early admission, initial U/S, or initial plain erect. The sensitivity of U/S was 91.3%, with a specificity of 88.6%, while CT was 90.47% and specificity of 86.5%.

Conclusion: Abdominal injuries can affect multiple organs and cause complications. Prompt resuscitation and treatment are crucial for recovery. Sonography is a sensitive method for detecting hemoperitoneum, but negative results may indicate organ injury without hemoperitoneum. Plain X-rays are essential for investigating polytraumatized patients, as they can detect associated injuries.
