Abstract

Background: Given the unique circumstances that mothers face before, during, and following childbirth, hospital maternity ward design is extremely important. Mothers are impacted by a variety of environmental elements, which necessitates the design of these places based on data. Clinical auditing is a procedure for improving quality that entails examining healthcare delivery to make sure best practices are being followed.

Objective: To audit the current management of the labor ward at Damnhour Medical National Institute.

Subjective: This was a prospective study conducted on 200 patients (primigravidae in active labor) attempted at the obstetrics and gynecology Department at Damanhour Medical National Institute from February 2023 to October 2023.

Results: During the first stage of labor, approximately 90% of laborers followed the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. Of those who followed the guidelines for labor management in the event of a first-stage delay, 97.6% and 92.25% of laborers did so, respectively. Of those who followed the guidelines for information, explanation, and communication with patients, only 59.0% did so. Based on NICE guidelines for pregnant women under study, observations were made by 100 women throughout the third stage of labor.

Conclusion: Significant facets of proper treatment are lacking, particularly those pertaining to the safety and thoroughness of examinations, the appropriateness of postpartum care, and the appropriateness of interactions between caregivers and patients. Staff and patients did not communicate well with one another.
