Abstract
Background: Gastrointestinal tract (GIT) diseases are medical emergencies that present unique difficulties for emergency department physicians, requiring immediate medical care.
Aim: The study assesses MDCT's role in assessing gastrointestinal tract emergencies, its sensitivity, and the incidence of acute abdomen gastrointestinal pathologies, providing detailed descriptions.
Method : The mean age of the one hundred cases who showed clinically acute abdominal pain of gastrointestinal beginning from April 2020 to October 2020 was fifty-one, with a range of twenty-six to seventy -seven.
Results: The research sample consisted of fifty-two percent women and forty-eight percent men. The most frequent causes of acute abdominal pain in our cases have been gastric causes (sixteen percent), which included perforation (37.5 percent) and obstruction (62.5 percent). Intestinal causes accounted for eighty-four percent of cases and included obstruction (fifty percent), inflammation (20.2 percent), perforation (17.8 percent), vascular issues (10.7 percent), and other frequent causes (1.2 percent). The MDCT demonstrated a sensitivity of ninety-eight percent (ninety-five percent confidence interval) and a positive predictive value of one hundred percent (95% CI) in assessing acute abdominal pain due to gastrointestinal problems among our cases.
Conclusion: Multi-detector computed tomography is a dependable diagnostic imaging technique for cases of sudden abdominal pain that is recommended to be related to the gastrointestinal system. It is very sensitive in identifying the underlying pathological problems causing the pain. The MDCT distinguishes between inflammatory, perforated, obstructive, and ischemic bowel diseases.
