Abstract
Background: Iodine is a trace element necessary for humans' well-being. The thyroid gland utilizes iodine to synthesize thyroid hormones. As selenium deficiency progresses, the activity of selenium-dependent DIOs is reduced, which in turn reduces both activation and breakdown of thyroid hormones.
Aim: This work evaluates Selenium and iodine status in patients with thyroid nodules.
Patients and methods: This cross-sectional control research has been performed on one hundred patients were selected from the Diabetes and Endocrine Unit at both Al-Hussein and Sayed Jalal University Hospitals and Outpatient Clinic, from June 2023 to December 2023 with appropriate consent to participate in this study. The cases were categorized into two groups: Group (A) involved sixty cases with thyroid nodules detected clinically and proved by thyroid ultrasound. Group (B) [Control group]: included 40 adult patients with diffuse goiter without nodules.
Results: Our results suggest that nodulaofoid disease cases may have elevated serum selenium and iodine levels compared to those with nodular goiter.
Conclusion: Patients with nodular thyroid disease may have elevated serum selenium and iodine levels compared to non-nodular goiter levels. Ultrasound findings indicated various thyroid conditions, including toxic multinodular goiter, toxic nodular adenoma, follicular thyroid carcinoma, Hashimoto thyroiditis, Papillary thyroid carcinoma, Thyroid follicular adenoma, Graves' disease, and benign thyroid nodule.
