Abstract
Background: The Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) is a secure, highly efficient, and durable contraceptive option that can be easily reversed.
Aim of work: to assess the combined use of vaginal misoprostol and cervical lignocaine administration on pain scores during IUCD insertion.
Subjects and methods: In this Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial, the population of this study was non-pregnant women who attended the family planning clinic and requested an IUCD insertion aged 18–45 years and delivered before by only elective cesarean section. Group A (study group) included 48 women who received misoprostol and lignocaine spray. Group B (the control group) included 48 women who did not receive any medical intervention.
Result: Group A had a significantly shorter mean duration than Group B during IUCD insertion (6.85 min Vs 8.49 min), respectively. The uterine length was significantly shorter in group A and VAS while sounding the uterus, and IUCD insertion was of a significantly lesser level in group A. VAS during Cusco insertion and VAS while grasping the cervix showed non-significant differences between the two groups. There was a non-significant difference between Group A and Group B regarding Insertion results and complications.
Conclusion: The concurrent application of vaginal misoprostol and lignocaine prior to the insertion of IUCDs was linked to a decreased duration of IUCD insertion, shorter uterine length, and lower pain scores as assessed by the visual analog scale (VAS) during both sounding the uterus and the actual IUCD insertion. However, the combined use of vaginal misoprostol and lignocaine before IUCD insertion did not result in a significant decrease in complications associated with the procedure.
